Annual Report: HMP Shrewsbury - 2001/02
As a 200 year-old county gaol, Shrewsbury Prison has considerable limitations. The site is severely restricted, much of the building is Listed, and there is little or no scope for development; whatever decoration or refurbishment is done leaves the establishment still looking like an old institution. However, much is constantly being done in many areas of the prison to make good use of space and to bring facilities up to an acceptable standard and to maintain them. The prison is clean; the food is of a high standard; the gym, the workshops, the education centre and other areas were well regarded by the Inspection Team who visited in November 2001. Considering the nature of the establishment (Local & Remand) and the constant movement of prisoners in and out of the prison, there are numerous schemes in hand for the rehabilitation of prisoners and every attempt is being made to create and maintain an atmosphere of decency in which prisoners can serve their time. The standard of Governor grades and Prison Officers is as high as it has been for some time; by and large all are positive and committed to doing a professional and caring job.
