Annual Reports: HMP/YOI Askham Grange - 2003

Askham Grange is an open women�s prison in the rural village of Askham Richard six miles from York. The CNA is 141. The population, all convicted, range from Young Offenders to the elderly, mostly in dormitory accommodation. Lifer prisoners have priority for single rooms, but on arrival at Askham have to be on a waiting list until a single room becomes vacant The prison has: -� A Mother and Baby Unit for 20 prisoners, 22 babies and a purpose built Mother and Baby Unit containing a larger nursery to replace the current facility for a further 10 places has just be completed with the official handover to the Establishment in June.� A Voluntary Drug Testing Unit for 23 Prisoners� The Annexe where prisoners on the enhanced resettlement regime live in single cell accommodation.� A Lifer Independence Unit for 3 which is accessible to all Stage 2 resettlement women
