Annual Reports: HMP Channings Wood - 2004
Channings Wood is a Category �C� training prison established in the early 70�s on the site of an army camp. It is situated in a rural area of South Devon near Newton Abbot.There are six main 2-storey Living Blocks, two of which are enclosed. One houses the vulnerable prisoners, the other the Therapeutic Community. During the year two mobile temporary units (MTU�s) were installed and now house mostly enhanced vulnerable prisoners. This has raised the occupational capacity to 667. An average of 42 prisoners a month have to share a cell designed for one.All prisoners, unless of retirement age or who are unfit, are expected to work or attend education. Vocational courses and offending behaviour programmes are also provided.
