Annual Reports: HMP Canterbury - 2004

The prison is confined in a small site close to the city centre. It dates from 1808, with many piecemeal additions and alterations since then. A local prison for most of the last century, it was re-roled in 2003 to a Category C Training Prison. At present the operating capacity is 314 male inmates with sentences of up to 4 years The intention has been to accommodate men with Kent addresses not only to facilitate access for visits but also to assist pre-release programmes in cooperation with local agencies.
